I choose this item because I already own a very useful Hot Tools straightener which lasted over 10 years. I am Asian, but have thick, course, dry, poofy hair which is very difficult to style. I had a straight-perm done recently to make my hair lie flat. Even though I have a straight-perm, this curling iron works. It heats up in about 5 seconds, the cord doesn't get tangled, and I haven't burned myself while using it.
This is how I do my hair. First, my hair is completely dry. (it doesn't work on damp hair) Second, I section my hair out. I curl the layer closest to my neck, which is split into left and right parts. The left part is split into 3 strands and so is the right. Since I have long hair, I noticed that I need to let the curling iron rest for about 5 seconds after curling the left part. Basically, I do the left side, wait 5 seconds, then do the right side.
Then I let some hair down and work my way out to the outermost, most visible layer. Doing it in sections and waiting for the iron to heat up in between makes the curls stay and look really nice. And, the 1 1/2" size is the best for loose curls. (I had a 1 inch curling iron before for semi-loose curls, but too many people said my hair looked like an old lady's hairstyle.) So far, I'm pretty satisfied with this product. The curls are the right shape and they last all day and even the next day if I don't wash my hair.
